Having qualified in London in 1988 with a BSc (Hons) in Nursing Studies, Karen then gained further qualifications in physical and complementary therapies. These include yoga, hydrotherapy, exercise instructor, therapeutic massage with aromatherapy oils and stress management. She is a lecturer at YogaCampus in London, teaching Yoga Therapy students issues surrounding pain, grief, stress and trauma.

Karen's passion for this integrated approach to healthcare has culminated in her founding York House, Centre for Integrated Healthcare and Complementary Medicine in Taunton. She has a deep understanding of mind:body medicine and combines this with a gentle, supportive and professional manner.

By combining her medical background with these evidence-based skills, Karen specialises in:

Karen is a British Wheel of Yoga Teacher and runs 4 yoga classes per week. She also offers 1:1 appointments for people with specific health issues and those preferring a tailor-made programme.

Karen can also offer yoga sessions via SKYPE on a regular basis to address individual needs. Karen is also an IST provider for the British Wheel of Yoga on Mindfulness.


Having qualified in massage and aroma therapy 26 years ago, Karen uses a variety of techniques ranging from a gentle aromatherapy massage, Indian Head Massage, deep tissue massage, soft tissue manipulation and lymph drainage massage.

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction
Karen has been practising Mindfulness techniques for around 15 years and introduced it into her therapeutic work 12 years ago.

Mindfulness is an evidence-based approach which has been shown, over the last 40 years, to help reduce the symptoms of stress, pain, anxiety, depression and many other illnesses. It has been widely approved by the international medical community, with over 300 research studies supporting the value of this work. It teaches greater awareness of our thoughts, feelings and sensations through simple techniques such as meditation and gentle movement. Not only does it teach coping strategies to deal with difficulties throughout your life, it has also been shown to change the physiology of the brain and other systems in the body to elicit a feeling of calm and control.
It is her fervent hope that these techniques will be introduced into the primary healthcare sector in this country over the next decade.

Pain Management
Karen has worked for many years both in the NHS and in the private sector with a Pain Consultant, offering pain management for chronic pain sufferers. She offers both physical therapy to help reduce the experience of pain in the form of massage, remedial exercises, yoga and soft tissue manipulation alongside pain management advice on pacing techniques, coping strategies and emotional support.

You can book a one to one appointment with Karen for a tailored treatment programme or join one of her small groups. She teaches 3 yoga classes a week, runs the MBSR courses with Dr Maya Spencer and has a Pain Management Clinic at York House.
