Our Practitioners

Dr Maya Spencer

Maya Spencer qualified as a doctor in 1979 and has worked as a Consultant Psychiatrist in Adult Mental Health in the NHS for many years.

Maya has been practising meditation since 1983 and fully appreciates the benefits personally and professionally. Along with Karen Atkinson, she will be running our Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) course at York House. She attended an educational course with Jon Kabat-Zinn at The Centre for Mindfulness Research and Practice at Bangor University in 2002.

She has now retired from the NHS and is able to pursue her long-term interests in mind-body medicine approaches for health problems. Maya's particular interests are psycho-neuroimmunology and the use of psychological techniques to assist people with chronic illness such as cancer or cardiovascular disease. She holds a Diploma in Clinical Hypnosis from University College London, and is a member of the British Society for Clinical and Academic Hypnosis. She has trained with Brandon Bays in The Journey work and uses this and other guided imagery techniques to help people discover how to connect more deeply with themselves and their body and so understand the emotional meaning of their illness.
